Start with your question
Four different questions. Four different next steps. The right City source matters more than a big number.
Your next best step
The number of permits across Toronto does not establish which rules apply to your lot. Your dimensions, zoning and proposed scope can change the answer.
Choose the type of work you are considering.
Match your actual Toronto address and review the sourced conditions.
Confirm open conditions with Toronto Building before ordering materials or accepting a quote.
BuildRules offers guidance, not permit approval.
Did this help you find the right next step?
Building a renovation team? Find a local professional. Claiming or buying a listing never affects an official permit answer.
Current dataset snapshot
201,876
Rows in Toronto’s active building applications and permits dataset. One row does not necessarily represent one distinct project, property or permit issued.
It is not a count of permits issued this month, renovation starts, approved projects or unique homeowners. Active records can span multiple application years and statuses.
Selected categories · Not a ranking
These are exact category labels used in the City dataset, not a complete breakdown and not evidence that a particular property can be developed.

A snapshot, not a timeline
These are selected, exact STATUS values found in the active Toronto dataset. They are neither a complete distribution nor counts of distinct projects. A City status may change after publication.
1,898
An application is on hold in the published record. The dataset cannot tell you what must be resolved for a particular property.
38,234
The record is marked issued. It does not establish that work started or finished.
123,118
The record is marked for inspection activity. Use the City’s status tool for the actual file.
19,972
The record indicates a revision was issued. Revisions may create additional rows for the same underlying project.
Do not add these categories to estimate total permits issued or construction starts. To check the actual progress of a specific application, use the official City status service.
Turn data into a decision
Whether you can build a deck, addition or garden suite depends on your address, proposed work, zoning and the conditions of the applicable rules. Start a property check before ordering materials or requesting a quote.
BuildRules queries the City of Toronto’s public CKAN datastore for the total number of records and separate totals filtered by exact PERMIT_TYPE or STATUS field values. Results are cached for up to six hours. A value may change after a City update. We do not collect private application files, infer permit approval, or calculate neighbourhood trends from this snapshot. An active register loses closed records, so a difference between two retrievals cannot be described as changes in construction activity. Historical trends need a separately validated, longitudinal dataset.
