Waiting for a Brampton building permit and not sure what is holding it up? Start by finding out which stage your application is in. Brampton uses different buttons and instructions before your application is accepted and after it enters plans review. Uploading documents in the wrong place, or overlooking a required follow-up, can leave the next step unclear.
Quick answer: Sign in to the official Brampton Building and Business Portal (opens in a new tab). Look for your file under My Submissions, My Permit Applications or My Issued Permits. The relevant action depends on the section and status. BuildRules cannot see private permit files or move an application through the City's review queue.
Start here: which stage is your permit in?
| What you see | What it generally means | Your next move |
|---|---|---|
| My Submissions → Rework Required | City staff have requested information during initial pre-review | Open Rework, review comments, attach missing documents, then select Rework Completed |
| My Permit Applications → review deficiencies / review outstanding | Your accepted application is being examined and the plans examiner needs more information | Select Provide Info, attach corrections, then Information Provided and reply to the examiner's email |
| My Permit Applications → still under review without an action shown | An accepted application is still with the review process; the portal alone may not identify a specific outstanding item | Check recent City messages and ask the Building Division which review or response is pending |
| My Issued Permits | A permit has been issued; the question is now about documents, revisions or inspections | Review your permit documents and the separate inspection workflow |
| Can't see the application in your account | Your account may not be associated with the application, or you may have a different file type | Ask the applicant/designer for the application number, then contact the City to confirm how you can access the file |
This table is a navigation aid, not a live status lookup. The actual permit record and instructions from the City take precedence. Brampton portal service overview (opens in a new tab).
If it says “Rework Required”: the application is still in pre-review
In My Submissions, Brampton says the following process applies before the permit application has been accepted for detailed review:
- Open Brampton Building and Business Portal (opens in a new tab) and sign in.
- Under My Submissions, find the application marked Rework Required.
- Select Rework and read the examiner's comment in full.
- Add the requested files with Add. Double-check that the plans, forms or supporting documents address each comment.
- Only after attachments are added, click Rework Completed. The Building Division receives a notification that the submission has been updated.
- If the instructions are ambiguous, reply to the Customer Service Plans Examiner's email to ask exactly which document or correction is required.
Don't click “Rework Completed” before uploading the documents. Brampton explicitly warns against that. Use the City's pre-review and rework instructions (opens in a new tab).
If the file is under “My Permit Applications”: complete the plans-review response
Once pre-review is accepted, Brampton moves the file to My Permit Applications. If the plans examiner finds deficiencies, you should receive an email. The City's published sequence is different from pre-review:
- Sign in and scroll to My Permit Applications.
- Locate the file, select Provide Info, and read the examiner's comments.
- Attach the corrected drawings and documents with Add.
- Click Information Provided after uploading everything requested.
- Reply to the plans examiner's email to confirm that the documents are in the portal. Brampton specifically asks you to do this. If the examiner's out-of-office reply identifies another staff member, contact that person.
Important distinction: Clicking Information Provided is not an approval or a promise of same-day issuance. The examiner still needs to review the response. Read the City's review-outstanding instructions (opens in a new tab).
The portal looks fine, but nothing has changed. What should you check?
Work through these in order, without guessing why the City has not issued the permit:
- Last action requested: Was an email sent asking for a missing document, revised drawing or clarification?
- Last applicant action: Did the designer or contractor actually attach the requested documents and click the correct completion button?
- Who controls the application: Is the file in your portal account or an agent's? Ask for the application number and the date of the most recent submission.
- Outstanding reviews: Is there a specific department or plans examiner awaiting information? Ask for the current stage and next required action, not only an estimated approval date.
- Scope changes: Were revised plans submitted after the original application? Ask whether they were received and which drawing version is being reviewed.
- Permission and access: If you cannot access the private portal record, use the City's official customer support channels. Do not ask someone to publish private addresses, permit numbers or uploaded plans in a public forum.
Brampton's portal service page (opens in a new tab) also points to Brampton Maps for property and permit status information. The public map can be a starting point, but it is not a substitute for the applicant's review comments in the authenticated portal. Open Brampton Maps (opens in a new tab).
What to write when your permit has been delayed
Send a focused message instead of a vague request to 'speed up my permit'. You can adapt this:
Subject: Request for outstanding items and next review step — Brampton permit application [application number] Hello Building Division, I am following up on application [number] for a residential project. The application was submitted on [date], and the last response or corrected drawings were uploaded on [date], if applicable. Could you please confirm (1) the current review stage, (2) whether any outstanding applicant items or department comments remain, (3) whether the most recent documents have been received, and (4) the next action required from me or my designer? I understand that the City must complete its review. I want to make sure the file is not waiting on something I can provide. Thank you.
Brampton Building Division: building.inquiries@brampton.ca · 905-874-2401, or 311 within Brampton. The City also offers appointments through its Building Division service page (opens in a new tab).
If a designer or contractor is the listed applicant, ask them to forward the examiner's actual comments and the uploaded response history. That is better evidence than a verbal assurance that 'the City is taking too long'.
Special case: rebuilding or repairing after fire or major damage
When a house has been damaged, first separate the urgent building-safety and insurance issues from the permit application. Make sure the proposed repair scope, drawings and site conditions match what the City has been asked to review. If your project involves structural repairs, ask the appropriate qualified designer or engineer to confirm the drawings and outstanding investigations.
A long wait does not prove that the City has lost the file, approved the work or missed a legal deadline. The official portal and direct City correspondence are the sources for your application status. Do not start work requiring a permit on the assumption that waiting long enough creates permission. For urgent hazards or an unsafe building, contact the appropriate local authorities rather than treating this article as emergency guidance.
Once a permit is issued: move to the inspection path
An issued permit is not an inspection sign-off. Brampton's portal allows applicants to view issued permits, download approved drawings and arrange building inspections. The City's inspection guide (opens in a new tab) explains how to manage this stage. Keep drawings on site and confirm the required inspection sequence for your specific permit.
What BuildRules can—and cannot—help with
If you're still planning a project, start with Brampton's source-reviewed project guides to understand likely permit triggers and preparation documents. For changes to an existing home, compare the basement renovation guide, home addition guide or second-unit guide, as relevant.
If you've already applied and are stuck, the official Brampton portal (opens in a new tab) is the correct place to resolve your private file. BuildRules does not submit changes to your application, see private review comments or influence the City's decision.
If you need help responding to technical drawing comments, you can browse building professionals and ask about experience with Brampton permit revisions. A directory listing does not establish professional qualifications or guarantee availability.

Questions & answers
How do I check my Brampton building permit application status?
Sign in to the City of Brampton Building and Business Portal. Check My Submissions, My Permit Applications and My Issued Permits to identify your application's stage. The City also points to Brampton Maps for public property or permit-status information, which does not replace private examiner comments.
What does Rework Required mean in Brampton?
It is a pre-review status under My Submissions. Read the City's comment, attach the requested documents with Add, then click Rework Completed. Do not mark rework complete before uploading the documents.
What does Provide Info or Information Provided mean?
During plans review under My Permit Applications, an examiner may request more information. Open Provide Info, attach corrected documents, click Information Provided, then reply to the plans examiner's email as the City directs. This does not mean the permit has been approved.
Who do I contact when my Brampton permit is delayed?
Contact the City of Brampton Building Division at building.inquiries@brampton.ca, 905-874-2401 or 311 within Brampton. Include your application number and ask for the current review stage and any outstanding actions.
Can I start construction if my Brampton permit has been delayed for months?
Do not treat a long waiting period as an approval. Confirm permit issuance and the approved scope with Brampton before starting any permit-required work.
Can BuildRules check my pending application or expedite it?
No. BuildRules offers public, source-linked permit research and preparation guidance. It cannot access private application comments, submit corrections or expedite the City's decision.

How do you check Toronto building permit status by address or permit number?
Open the official City Building Application Status tool and search by address or application/permit number. Read the result with the examiner’s correspondence: application review, permit issuance and inspection closure are separate milestones.
Toronto building permit application: what do you need to submit?
Start with the City guide for your exact project. Prepare the required drawings, forms, fees and applicable-law information, then follow the submission route in that guide. If you already applied, use the City status lookup instead of starting over.
What should you do if work started before the required permit?
Establish the permit requirement and next steps with Toronto Building. If the started work requires a permit, the City says work must stop while the application is processed. Submitting an application is not permission to continue.
